The image will be recalculated only if you select the option Resample Image in Photoshop. If you change a 300 dpi image file to a relative resolution of 72 dpi, it has no effect on the absolute image size or the pixel numbers. Keep in mind that only the absolute resolution of the image determines its size (e.g., 2000 x 3008 pixels), not its relative resolution (e.g., 300 dpi). The relative resolution of an image file can be reset in image editing programs like Photoshop. It looks like “horizontal resolution 300 dpi, vertical resolution 300 dpi”.
